Eyelash lace is a lace whose scalloped edge is finished with fine fringed threads — the “lashes” — that extend beyond the last motif. It is the first thing most lingerie and sleepwear makers ask us for, and for a practical reason: the edge is already finished.
How the edge is made
On a Raschel or Leavers-style machine, the pattern threads are carried past the edge of the last motif and left free rather than being bound back in. Where a standard lace ends in a scallop, an eyelash lace ends in a scallop with a soft fringe. It is a construction feature, not something added afterwards.
Why it matters in production
- No hemming. The selvedge is the finished edge of the garment — a bralette band, a camisole hem, a brief leg opening. That is one operation removed from every piece.
- Softer against the skin. No folded hem, no elastic binding at the edge.
- Visual lightness. The fringe breaks the hard line of the scallop; it reads as delicate even on a heavier lace.
How to judge quality
Two things: lash density and shedding. Good eyelash lace has dense, even lashes; cheap versions are sparse and uneven. Pull a few lashes on the swatch — if they release easily, they will shed after a few washes and the edge will look bald. Ask for the wash-test result or run your own on the bulk sample.

- Nylon-cotton eyelash lace — the largest group; soft, dry hand, dyes well. Sleepwear, blouse trims, dresses.
- 100% nylon eyelash lace — finer and slightly crisper; classic lingerie.
- Polyester eyelash lace — most colourfast; lines washed often.
- 1.5 × 3 m eyelash lace pieces — pre-cut with lashes on both edges, for panels and yokes without cutting from a roll.

Where it is used
Bralette bands and cups, brief leg openings and waistbands, camisole and slip hems, sleeve edges on blouses and dresses, and as a trim on knit sleepwear. It is also the lace most often combined with stretch lace bodies in a set.
